Group Show
Designing an Exhibition
During my final year at SCAD, our fine arts program was tasked with the capstone project of holding a group exhibition. This including everything from finding a venue to installing the artwork.
I was on the graphic design team. We were in charge of creating an artist’s book as well as name placquards for all of the artists. We created the branding, logo, colors, and social media posts to prepare for the show.
We chose the name Configuration because our group of artists were diverse and in some ways intertwined, but otherwise separate. The show exhibited a variety of artworks, mediums, and processes that converged to form a unique arrangement of elements.
For social media, there were two directions that could be followed.
If we showed the artist photos, we were more likely to be recognized by fellow community members and students. By showing the artwork, we would be able to catch the attention of people interested in these specific pieces of art.
As a group, we planned how the works would be placed throughout the space. A scale model was built and images representing the artworks were printed (to scale). We negotiated spaces and the communications each art piece would have with its surroundings.
We created an artist book to showcase the individual artists. This included the artist’s Artist Statement, Biography, and select works as well as their contact information. The layouts changed slightly from artist to artist, as image dimensions/cropping needed to change. The format centralizes the artist on the left page and the artwork on the right.
The cream color acts as a neutral background for the artwork’s display and matches the other marketing materials.
